Preamble - If you are born in America you are owed life, liberty, and the ability to pursue happiness - to me that means your children should be able to come of age in safety, get a quality education without fear, build knowledge and a life in adolescence without financial anxiety, work while being treated with dignity, afford to buy house, have time to build a family, and the ability to retire with the knowledge that their children will be afforded the same chance at the American Dream.
A family of four will spend $1,250,000 on healthcare expenses across 40 years. Our ability to buy a home, afford a family, or take a real vacation has been stolen by healthcare fees alone. Instead of helping stop the 50,000 deaths per year of people without insurance in America, lawmakers start making as much money as they can the moment their plane touches down in DC. It’s Time for a Change
The Working Families Bill of Rights is 7 Guarantees that enshrine working class dignity into law.
Working Families Bill of Rights - The 7 Guarantees:
Personal Healthcare for All
Because nobody should be indebted to their employer just to stay alive; medical bankruptcies shouldn’t exist at all and should not be the number one leading cause of bankruptcy. And no one should get between your doctor and your health, especially not politicians in Washington D.C. - Medical care and privacy for all
Security in American Elections
To secure American elections for American Working Families we need to get money out of politics! We need publicly funded election with spending caps; stop unlimited corporate spending; get lobbyist money out of D.C.; stop congressional stock trading; and make it illegal to profit from being an elected representative of the people.
Accessible Childcare
Because working parents shouldn’t have to choose between their income and their children. It’s too expensive to raise a child in America, especially places with higher costs of living like in IL-08.
The Right to an Education
Because a fair economy and good paying jobs starts with accessible education. We have a shortage of experienced tradespeople and blue-collar jobs used to be the number one way into the middle-class, now over 60% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck; many of us are just struggling to survive, let alone go to school.
Dignity in Work
If you put in a full days work, you should get a fair day’s wage. Work should pay enough to live. If poverty was adjusted for inflation a $15 minimum wage would be below the poverty line – it’s time American workers finally got their fair shot at the American dream.
Affordable Housing For All
We need to build more housing and faster; corporate landlords should not be able to own multiple properties; American houses should belong to the families that live in them.
Safeguarding Our Future Environment
Kids in asthma-alley don’t get a second set of lungs. We need a hard clean-power deadline, affordable electric cars, and a New Civilian Conservation Corps to tear pollution down while building families up - we’ll be launching hundreds of thousands of environmental-focused union jobs. We refuse to hand our children a burning planet and call it “freedom.
How to Pay for it
NO NEW TAXES ON THE WORKING CLASS, THE MIDDLE CLASS, OR SMALL BUSINESSES
Make the 1% pay their fair share - a wealth tax on the top 1%, progressive taxes on those making over $50M; increase the number of tax brackets above $350,000/year.
Make Wall Street pay their fair share - Speculation tax on high-dollar trades, tax corporate stock buybacks
Legalize Cannabis - Fully legalize and tax cannabis at the federal level
Automate Debt Ceiling - Stop letting politicians lower America’s credit score by shutting down government
The total raised by the above would pay for the entire Working Families Bill of Rights AND pay down the deficit $500,000,000,000 (500 Billion Dollars) per year
